**NEW** People-Drawing Workshop

The Spark

I took my first steps towards Zoom-based classes last month with an urban-sketch workshop for beginners. And I’m carrying the confidence from that experience forward with a more advanced workshop for urban-sketchers. This one is focused on drawing people and incorporating human activity in your art.

The first workshop was prompted by colleagues on a writing group I am part of, who spoke about wanting to draw but not knowing a suitable way to learn. I offered to setup a 2-session workshop over Zoom, and over 30 people signed up! These participants were divided into 3 cohorts. I completed the second sessions for two of the cohorts last weekend. This weekend I will conclude the workshop for the final cohort. The experience was amazing, even though it was also exhausting.

Because of the demand for more classes, I am offering this first workshop again for May 16 and 23. If you are interested in this two session workshop (for beginners), read details and consider signing up here.

But while doing this, I realized there are also other, more experienced, urban-sketchers who are interested specifically in people-drawing. A lot of my artist-friends in the USk community are talented in different styles, working with different tools and media. But some of them, while being very good at one thing, are not so good, or confident, or natural, at other aspects. I find people-drawing to be one such common aspect of urban-sketching.

Who is it for?

This new workshop is for you if -

  • You are comfortable with city or natural landscapes, but

  • You have trouble incorporating human figures and activity into your scenes.

Scope of the Workshop

In this workshop, I will cover people-drawing in the following ways -

  • Draw-along demos, where I draw from reference pics, explaining my process for you to follow along

  • Speed drawing exercises, where you draw lots of figures at brief time intervals

  • Shifting Points of View, where we discuss different ways to see an urban scene with respect to human activity at the site

  • Shifting Focus, exercises and demos to seamlessly include people in the foreground, middleground or background of your pieces.

I draw people at different levels of detail based on how important they are to my scene. While I demo my techniques, I will also speak about how I make the crucial artistic decisions that define my pieces. I will invite you to think along the same lines for your style of art, and tap into what organically works for you.

Proposed dates for this 2-hour single session workshop are May 9 and 30. I am opening it to limited seats, in order to be able to give individual attention during the class, so be quick to register if you’re interested!
